York's legal profession is older than most and leans towards private client work: wills, trusts, probate, estates and property. Several firms have been in the city for well over a century. Larger commercial work usually goes to Leeds, half an hour away, and many York residents instruct Leeds firms for it.
York County Court and Family Court are on Piccadilly. Crown Court cases for the area are heard at Leeds or at York Crown Court, depending on the case, and regional High Court work goes to Leeds.
For anything specialised, Leeds is close and has far more depth, so York's smaller market needn't hold you back. Locally, solicitors in York are well set up for private client and property work, and they handle rural matters from the surrounding area. Legal aid provision in the city is limited.
Firms in York hold Legal Aid Agency contracts in Children and social services, Civil liberties and public bodies, Criminal defence, Domestic abuse and protection and Family and relationships. Legal aid is means tested and a contract does not guarantee a firm has capacity, but these are the areas where public funding is available locally.
