Yes. This is a fundamental legal right under the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984. You are entitled to free independent legal advice at the police station at any time of day or night. Always request it before any interview begins.
In most circumstances you have the right to silence, though the court may draw adverse inferences in some cases if you don't mention something you later rely on in your defence. A criminal defence solicitor will advise you before any interview takes place.
Less serious offences (summary offences) are dealt with in the Magistrates' Court. More serious offences are sent to the Crown Court where there is a judge and jury. Some offences (either-way offences) can go to either court.
Criminal legal aid is more widely available than in other areas. At the police station it is always free. For court proceedings, eligibility depends on a means test and an "interests of justice" test. A solicitor can assess whether you qualify.
