Getting legal help in London

There are more solicitors in London than in the rest of England and Wales put together, so the hard part is choosing, not finding one. The big firms around the City and Canary Wharf act mostly for businesses and financial institutions, and many won't take on an individual at all. The firms that will are spread across the boroughs. For a family or housing matter, a high street practice in Croydon or Walthamstow is often a better fit than a name you know from the financial pages.

High Court civil claims are heard at the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand, and business, property and insolvency work goes to the Rolls Building close by. Most everyday cases never get near either. They go to the Central Family Court at High Holborn, the Central London County Court or one of the county court hearing centres out in the boroughs. A criminal case starts at the local magistrates' court and, if it goes further, moves to one of several Crown Courts. The Old Bailey is simply the best known.

London has more advice agencies than anywhere else, and longer waiting lists to match. Most boroughs have a law centre. Contact them early about housing or immigration, because their places fill quickly. High housing costs mean some people here pass the legal aid means test when they wouldn't elsewhere, so check before you rule it out. If the matter is urgent and local firms are full, bear in mind that most legal work no longer needs you to visit an office.

Legal aid in London

Firms in London hold Legal Aid Agency contracts in Asylum and human rights, Children and social services, Civil liberties and public bodies, Clinical negligence, Criminal defence, Debt and insolvency, Domestic abuse and protection, Education, Employment, Family and relationships, Housing and tenancy, Immigration and visas, Mental health and capacity, Social care and funding and Welfare benefits. Legal aid is means tested and a contract does not guarantee a firm has capacity, but these are the areas where public funding is available locally.
