Setting up a charity, choosing the right legal structure, trustee duties, Charity Commission investigations and mergers. Trustees are volunteers carrying real legal responsibilities, and most problems in the sector come from good people not knowing what those responsibilities were. Tell us what you need and we'll match you with an SRA-regulated charity solicitor.
Firms that have verified their listing with us come first. To see which firms fit your problem, describe it in the search box.

A charitable incorporated organisation suits most new charities, giving limited liability without needing to register at Companies House as well. A charitable company works where you need the familiarity of company law, and a trust where you are mainly holding assets. The choice affects trustee liability, so make it deliberately.
To act in the charity's best interests, manage its resources responsibly, act with reasonable care and skill, ensure it is carrying out its purposes for public benefit, and comply with the law and the governing document. Trustees are personally exposed where they act outside those duties, which is why advice at the difficult moments is worth taking.
It depends. Many are regulatory compliance cases resolved by providing information. A statutory inquiry is far more serious and carries powers to suspend trustees, freeze accounts and appoint an interim manager. Either way, respond promptly and carefully rather than defensively.
Generally not for acting as trustees, unless the governing document or the Charity Commission permits it. Payment for goods or services supplied is possible within strict conditions and with proper conflict management. Getting this wrong is one of the most common findings against charities.
